Silent Consent is… …to allow a practice to continue even when you know it’s wrong
Root course of silent consent: Lack of planning leading to decisions made under time pressure; which leads to «short cuts». Successful experience with «short cuts» makes it likely to become an unwonted practice.
Examples of background situation that lead to unwonted practice:
Being distracted by disturbances in the surrounding
Take a shortcuts to get the job done
Forgetting to take the necessary precaution
Acquired some bad habits
Experienced problems and risks that were not predicted
Being exposed to unnecessary risk when carrying out activities
Having an culture that invites people to unwanted decisions
Action we need to reveal silent consent:
Make sure we always have good experience with the truth
Never make it personal. Make it cultural!
Reward teams for good observations
Never promise more than you can deliver
Show respect and use the words «Thank you» a lot
Involve workforce agreeing on best practice for closing silent consent
Always use open questions conducting Care Talks/Safety Talk and conversations, always in peace
Make platforms where silent consent is brought up, e.g. pre job meetings, HSE meeting, Risk assessment meetings, new recruiters training etc.
Celebrate success stories and good examples
Explain «why» more than «how» at the start
This is not a campaign; make it a program - a lifestyle
Never forget the basics; sufficient time, appropriate guidelines, correct training and the proper equipment for the task.
Everyone makes the right decision, even when no one is looking.
